Cultural Note

🈶 In Japanese culture, “腹” represents not only the body but also honesty and emotional depth. Expressions like 腹の中 (what’s inside one’s belly) mean someone’s true feelings, and 腹を割る (“to split the belly”) means to speak honestly. The word “seppuku” (切腹) — ritual suicide — also originates from this deep association of the belly with spirit and honor.
